Product Variants Guide
What are Product Variants?
Product variants allow you to create different versions of the same product based on attributes like size, color, or other characteristics. For example, a T-shirt might have variants for different sizes and colors.
Creating Variants
Step 1: Set Up the Base Product
Create your main product with:
- Product name
- Description
- Base price
- Category and type
Step 2: Add Variants
For each variant, you'll specify:
- Attributes: Select the specific combination (e.g., Size: Large, Color: Red)
- SKU: Unique identifier for this variant
- Price: Override the base price if needed
- Inventory: Track stock levels for this specific variant
Step 3: Variant Images
You can add specific images for each variant to show the exact product the customer will receive.
Validation Rules
Duplicate Attributes
Each attribute type can only appear once per variant. If you select:
- Size: Large, Color: Red (Valid)
- Size: Large, Size: Medium (Invalid - duplicate Size attribute)
The system will prevent you from publishing until you fix duplicate attributes.
Inventory Management
Each variant tracks its own inventory:
- In Stock: Current quantity available
- Reserved: Items in pending orders
- Low Stock Alert: Get notified when inventory is low
Pricing
Base Price
The default price from the parent product.
Variant Price Override
Set a specific price for this variant if it differs from the base price.
Dynamic Pricing
Prices can be adjusted based on:
- Promotions
- Seasonal sales
- Member discounts
Best Practices
- Consistent Naming: Use the same attribute values across products (e.g., always "Medium" not "Med" or "M")
- Complete Information: Fill out all variant details before publishing
- Unique SKUs: Ensure each variant has a distinct SKU
- Accurate Inventory: Keep stock levels up to date
- Quality Images: Add clear images for each variant when possible
Common Issues
Can't Publish Variant
Check for:
- Duplicate attributes
- Missing required fields
- Invalid SKU format
- Negative inventory values
Variant Not Appearing
Ensure:
- Variant is published
- Parent product is published
- Inventory is greater than zero (if enabled)
Tips
- Create all attribute types and values before adding variants
- Test with a single variant first to understand the workflow
- Use bulk operations for products with many variants
- Keep variant names descriptive and searchable
